The Constitution needed nine states, and the newspapers went to war. Writing as Publius, Hamilton, Madison & Jay published 85 essays for it; writing as Brutus, Cato, Centinel and the Federal Farmer, their opponents answered blow for blow. Below: every major front of that war, round by round — the original words, a plain-English translator, and after each round, the echo: where the same argument is still being fought today. Every 1788 passage is excerpted from the original essays, which are in the public domain — trimmed with ellipses, period spelling preserved ("controul" and all). Plain-English renderings and modern echoes are interpretive; modern examples span administrations and parties, because the arguments do. Anti-Federalist authorship follows common attribution — the pen names kept their secrets well.
